How to Calculate Discounts

Calculating a discount is straightforward: multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then subtract from the original price. Or take a shortcut — multiply by (100% − discount%) to go straight to the sale price.

Worked Examples

25% off £80: £80 × 0.25 = £20 saving. You pay £60. Or: £80 × 0.75 = £60.

30% off £149.99: £149.99 × 0.70 = £104.99. You save £45.00.

Buy one get one half price on a £12 item: You pay £12 + £6 = £18 for two items. That's equivalent to 25% off the full price of two (£24).

Stacking Discounts

When two discounts are applied sequentially (e.g. 20% off then an extra 10% off), they don't add up to 30%. Instead: £100 × 0.80 = £80, then £80 × 0.90 = £72. The combined discount is actually 28%, not 30%. Use the percentage calculator to verify.

Is It Really a Bargain?

A large percentage off a high original price can still be expensive. A 50% discount sounds impressive, but if the item was overpriced to begin with, the "sale" price might be what it should have cost anyway. Always compare the final price to alternatives, not just the percentage saved.
