Tipping Etiquette: UK vs US
Tipping customs vary dramatically between countries, which can cause confusion when dining out or travelling.
In the UK, 10–12.5% is standard for good service in restaurants. Many UK restaurants add a discretionary service charge of 12.5% to the bill automatically — check before adding a tip on top. You're not legally obliged to pay the service charge if the service was poor. Tipping in pubs, for takeaway, or for counter service is not expected.
In the US, 15–20% is expected in sit-down restaurants. 20% has become the de facto standard in many cities. Servers in the US often earn below minimum wage and rely on tips as a core part of their income, which is why tipping expectations are higher.
Worked Example
A dinner bill of £85.50 with 12.5% tip for 3 people:
Tip: £85.50 × 0.125 = £10.69. Total: £96.19. Per person: £32.06.
When Not to Tip
In the UK, tipping is not expected at fast food restaurants, self-service cafés, pubs (though you can offer "and one for yourself"), or shops. In hotels, a pound or two per night for housekeeping is appreciated but not required.
